Johnson City Memorial Park
Johnson City, Tennessee
The firm was introduced to a number of planning and design needs in Johnson City; a senior center, parks and recreation, performing arts and aquatic center. Rather than addressing each individual project, the concept of a civic campus encompassing the total needs of the individual projects was presented. The firm was commissioned to study this concept and began with a series of interactive workshops among the various public entities, leading to the development of a master program statement addressing approximately 225,000 gsf of facilities. Multiple sites were analyzed, with the City subsequently accepting the recommendation to relocate the high school football stadium to the high school campus, freeing Memorial Park to become the City’s new civic campus. A phased master plan was successfully developed for the nearly $50M project, identifying a $15M Phase One adhering to their available funding. The master plan was enthusiastically endorsed by the public at-large in a televised community forum conducted by the firm at the request of the City Commission.
