Blount County War Dead Memorial

Maryville, Tennessee

Repair of the Blount County War Dead Memorial is needed. Weather has taken a toll on the monument dedicated May 29, 1965. There also is a need to update the monument to include Blount Count service members who have fallen in recent wars. Blount County Commission authorized the United Veterans to oversee the project. Architectural renderings of the proposed modernization reveal a design strong in concept and fortified with simple dignity. The updated memorial would unify into one element monuments now spread across the courthouse grounds. The Battle of the Bulge Monument, Revolutionary War Veterans Memorial, Sam Houston Monument and the statue that stands atop the War Dead Memorial would be moved and placed around a paved walkway on the courthouse lawn. Five-foot-tall granite walls would be inscribed with the names of all Blount County residents killed in the line of duty. There would be a granite bench, flowering ornamental trees and flag poles.
